The Sikeston
Depot is the major project of the Sikeston Cultural Development
Corporation (SCDC), a tax-exempt, non profit organization. SCDC
was organized in the 1990's by representatives of several key community
constituencies --
- Downtown
Business Association
- Sikeston
Area Chamber of Commerce
- Sikeston
Art League
- Sikeston
Historical Community
- Sikeston
Missouri Arts, Inc.
- Sikeston-Miner
Convention and Visitors Bureau
Each
of these groups has a seat on the board of directors and are joined
on the board by several representatives of the community at large.
An all-volunteer organization, SCDC was responsible for funding
the procurement of The Sikeston Depot and renovating the building
and adjacent property to its current use. Committees of the board
continue to develop the permanent historical displays, produce an
ever-changing series of art exhibits, and cultural events, and assure
The Depot provides an attractive and educational experience for
more the 7,000 visitors a year.
The
board's work is assisted greatly by more than 100 volunteers who
staff The Depot during opening hours, help research and construct
exhibits, and participate in special events.
Initial
funds for purchase and renovation of The Depot came from the proceeds
of a trust held by the City of Sikeston for the purpose of establishing
a permanent cultural center in the community. Additionally, area
families and businesses contributed more than $50,000 in a capital
campaign to complete the project and assure funds for structural
improvements and repairs in the future.
To
further assure the future, a permanent endowment was established
in early 2000 so that ongoing income can be dedicated to Depot operations
and growth. More than $100,000 was contributed to the endowment
in its first six months and another $50,000 was raised by July 2001.
Both amounts qualify for 50% matching deposits in the Missouri
Cultural Trust Fund operated by the Missouri Arts Council
with allocations from the Missouri State Legislature.
The
SCDC Trust Committee -- independent of the SCDC board --
acts as a third-party fiduciary to manage prudent investment of
the capital and endowment funds. Currently, all restricted funds
are invested in Sikeston area financial institutions as a means
of also boosting the area's economic development.
The
Sikeston Depot is also fortunate to have a growing "Friends
of The Depot" organization of families and individuals
who wish to support the endeavor. Their annual contributions, help
fund maintenance of the facility and assure a free-admission policy.
Free-will
contributions from Depot visitors and sales from The Depot's gift
shop round out the funding sources.
